John Deere was an American inventor, blacksmith, and businessman who founded the Deere & Company, one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery in the world. He was born on February 7, 1804, in Rutland, Vermont, and moved to Grand Detour, Illinois, in 1837, where he developed his first successful steel plow. This plow revolutionized farming in the United States by making it possible to cultivate the hard, sticky prairie soil of the Midwest. Over the years, Deere continued to grow his business, expanding his product line to include other types of farm equipment, including the famous John Deere tractor. Today, the Deere & Company continues to be a leader in agricultural machinery, and John Deere remains a widely recognized and respected name in the farming community.
